“I have always been writing music and singing in the comfort of my own home. I had a couple of friends, notably one guy named Christian Kane, who was on the show ‘Leverage’, and he started playing shows in Los Angeles with his band and got his music put into his movies. I basically followed in his footsteps. His manager linked me up with Henri O ‘Connor who is the co-founder of The Life of Riley and the guitarist. At first I wanted to have my songs in television shows or movies, but then we started playing shows in Los Angeles. The band grew from there. It’s always been a hobby of mine. Now it’s taken a life of its own. So we sometimes pull the reigns back when it gets too busy, because it’s always going to be a side project for us –more like a passion thing”.
Who are your musical influences?
“My musical influences are all across the board. It depends on my mood and changes with the wind. Right now I’m really into electronic pop stuff like Empire of the Sun, Phoenix, and Two Door Cinema Club. I think it inspired the new stuff we’re writing a little bit, hopefully more in the production of it. Nobody knows this about me, but I actually produce a lot of music on my own, for myself. It will never be released. I try to duplicate a lot of the electronic pop stuff. It’s an outlet for me. The Life of Riley is much more singer/songwriter stuff and soulful. With that kind of music my influences are James Morrison (who I’m seeing tonight in Hollywood), Jeff Buckley and Amos Lee. When I was a kid I grew up on a farm so I listened to country music a lot. It’s really all over the place. At first people didn’t know how to place The Life of Riley, so now with the newest record it’s more cohesive and more figuring out the sound we like the best.”
Eastern Iowa native and Hollywood star Riley Smith, who graduated from Alburnett High School in 1997, will play “Travis” in the indie feature film “The Farm,” opposite another notable Iowan turned Hollywood star, Tanna Frederick.
“The Farm” is the first in the Project Cornlight film initiative series founded by Frederick, and will be shot in her hometown area of Mason City, Iowa, this summer. The film is about a single mother who returns to her Iowa childhood home when her grandfather becomes ill, and must deal with her abandoned daughter and her past.
“We are very pleased to have Riley Smith in this ensemble! He is another amazing actor from Iowa who has been successfully working for the past several years in Los Angeles,” says Kimberly Busbee, co- director of Project Cornlight and producer and casting director for “The Farm.”
“Riley is handsome, sexy, charming and incredibly talented and versatile as an actor — everything a leading man should be. He even sings,” Busbee says. ”He is perfect for this Project Cornlight film.”
Smith was discovered several years ago by a talent agent in his hometown mall, which led to his modeling and acting careers. From there, Smith has added numerous impressive credits in film and television, including among others, Radio, Motocrossed, 24, Drive, Joan of Arcadia, The Playboy Club, Criminal Minds, The Glades, Ghost Whisperer, The Closer, Universal Squadrons, and most recently, his work as “William” in the feature film Shirin in Love. He also performs with his band, “The Life of Riley.”

We wanted our friends, family and fans to be part of our next record. Consider yourself the record label and us your artist. As most of you know and have heard, we have at least 10 songs ready to record and release. Now we just need your support with financial donations to make this dream a reality. On April 6th, My best friend Kim and I had the pleasure of meeting Riley and his mom for coffee in Los Angeles, CA. Since the site first opened back in 2010, we had kept in contact via email, but had yet to meet in person. For about 1 1/2 hours, we talked about his past, current, and upcoming film projects, his music, the cool kickstarter he’ll be launching soon, and more. He was also so kind to answer any questions I had. We really enjoyed talking to his mom and getting to know her as well. It was so great she could join us while visiting him for Easter weekend.
Riley loved the Iowa Hawkeyes leather necklace I got him for his birthday and put it on immediately. It looks so great on him in the photos! Riley gave me some The Life of Riley merchandise, which was so sweet. He also took the time to sign some 8×10 photos I brought with me. He personalized both mine and Kim’s and also signed some others. I’ll soon be giving away a few autographed photos on the site for a contest, so stay tuned!
Before Riley and his mom left, we took some photos with him before giving them both a hug goodbye. It was so wonderful to finally meet Riley. He’s such a fantastic guy and I’m really looking forward to seeing him again in the future. I hope all his fans will get the chance to meet him someday. Thanks again Riley for making my day!
